How it works

Built for procurement, not press releases.

A clear methodology, public-source benchmarking, and a Canadian-mill focus most international price reports miss.

1
Indexed to Fastmarkets
Canadian flat-rolled prices use the Fastmarkets fob-mill-Canada index basis (ASTM A1011, raw material surcharges included). Methodology is published in every issue.
2
Triangulated monthly
CME US Midwest HRC futures, Bank of Canada FX, mill-published news, and standard inter-product spreads — combined into a defensible Canadian price view.
3
Read in 10 minutes
Free brief: one page. Pro brief: five pages with deep-dive and procurement calls. Designed for buyers who need signal, not a PhD in steel economics.
"
After 15 years in Canadian steel distribution, I kept watching buyers price Q3 commitments off US benchmarks that didn't reflect what was actually happening at Dofasco, Stelco, or Algoma. SteelPulse Canada is the brief I wish I'd had on my desk.

FAQ

Common questions.

If something isn't covered here, reply to any newsletter and ask. We answer every email.

Why monthly, not weekly?
Canadian flat-rolled prices don't change enough week-to-week to warrant a weekly brief. The monthly cadence reflects the actual rhythm of mill list price changes and quarterly contract cycles. Pro subscribers also receive 2 bi-weekly Market Trends briefs focused on tariff and trade news between monthly issues.
Are these firm quotes?
No. SteelPulse Canada prices are indicative market intelligence based on published indices, mill-published pricing, and methodology-aligned derivations. They are useful for procurement planning and benchmarking. For a firm quote, go to your service centre or directly to the mill.
How is this different from CRU, Platts, or Fastmarkets?
The major price reporting agencies cover global steel comprehensively but at $5,000–25,000/year subscriptions, and their Canadian coverage is thin. SteelPulse Canada is Canadian-mill focused, procurement-oriented, and priced for individual buyers and small teams. We benchmark to Fastmarkets but write for buyers who care more about a Dofasco lead-time shift than a global flat-products report.
Can I expense this?
Yes — Pro subscriptions are typically expensed as professional development or market research. Stripe receipts are issued automatically and include GST/HST. Email us if you need a custom invoice for AP.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. Pro is a month-to-month subscription. Cancel from your Stripe customer portal (link in every Pro email) and your access ends at the current period's end. No retention calls, no friction.
Will you cover structural and long products?
Currently we cover 5 flat-rolled and plate products (HRC, CRC, HDG, HRPO, plate). Structural and long products coverage is on the roadmap as we build out the mill survey network. We'd rather give you 5 products with real depth than 10 with thin coverage on half.
